01What Is Scaling — What a Toothbrush Can’t Do
Plaque left behind after brushing combines with minerals in saliva within a few days to form hard tartar (calculus). Once tartar forms, it can’t be removed with a toothbrush or floss — only dental equipment can remove it. Scaling is the most basic preventive treatment that removes this tartar and bacterial film.
Tartar itself doesn’t hurt. The problem is that tartar’s rough surface becomes a nesting ground for bacteria, causing gum inflammation (gingivitis), and if left untreated, progresses into periodontitis, which dissolves the jawbone. Periodontitis is the leading cause of tooth loss among Korean adults.
Periodontitis causes little to no pain until it has progressed quite far. If your gums bleed when brushing, swell often, or your breath has gotten worse, those are already warning signs. “It doesn’t hurt, so it’s fine” doesn’t hold true for gum disease.

Insurance covers scaling once a year, but the care interval you actually need varies by gum condition. Those with periodontitis or implants are recommended a 3-6 month interval, and if diagnosed with gum disease, insurance applies under gum treatment rather than scaling.

04Implant Care — Why Scaling Becomes Even More Important
Implants don’t get cavities, but they’re vulnerable to peri-implantitis instead. With weaker bacterial defenses than natural teeth, if bacterial film builds up around them, the jawbone silently erodes, and in severe cases, the implant can be lost. What determines an implant’s lifespan is as much about aftercare as surgical skill.

06Correcting Scaling Myths
“Scaling makes my teeth sensitive” — Mostly temporary
This is a temporary reaction that occurs as the tooth root surface, previously covered by tartar, becomes exposed, and usually settles within 1-2 weeks. Seongmo Dental’s 37°C warm water system reduces the sensitivity stimulus during the procedure itself. Using sensitivity toothpaste for 1-2 weeks speeds recovery.
“There’s a gap between my teeth now” — It’s not new, just revealed
