Two or three visits for one crown, with a temporary tooth falling out in between — does it really have to be that way? 01What Is a One-Day Crown/Prosthetic

Crowns and inlays that cover a tooth after decay or root canal treatment usually proceed like this: taking an impression, attaching a temporary tooth, then returning 1–2 weeks later for fitting. If the temporary tooth falls out in between, another visit is needed. A same-day prosthetic is a treatment that compresses this process into a single day. From scan → design → milling → sintering → fitting, the entire process is completed in-house while the anesthesia is still active.

Some places advertise “same-day prosthetics” in name only while actually outsourcing to an external lab. For it to be truly same-day, the scanner, milling equipment, and sintering furnace must all be in-house . Seongmo Dental has this full system, and depending on the material, everything from scanning to fitting is completed within a 25–50 minute chair time.

02What Are the Benefits of Finishing in One Day Without a Temporary Tooth

Being fast is not everything. When the temporary-tooth period disappears, there are things that change clinically.

Finished With a Single Anesthesia — Since tooth preparation and fitting finish within a single anesthesia, there is no burden of anesthesia or pain for a second visit.
Zero Temporary Tooth Trouble — There is fundamentally no temporary tooth falling out, sensitivity from temporary cement leakage, or gum inflammation around a temporary tooth.
Reduced Risk of Secondary Infection — The exposure time of the prepared tooth is reduced to a few hours, reducing the chance for bacteria to invade in that time.
Half the Number of Visits — This makes a real difference for busy office workers, those coming from far away, or those with dental anxiety.
Precision — Instead of holding impression material in the mouth while it sets, digital scanning with about 20μm precision means even those with a strong gag reflex can comfortably have an impression taken.

03Seongmo Dental’s One-Day Full System

Seongmo Dental’s one-day prosthetics are based on the CEREC system from Dentsply Sirona of Germany.

Among these, in particular the SpeedFire sintering furnaceis the core of same-day treatment. Zirconia must be fired at high temperature after milling to reach its final strength, a process that takes more than half a day at a lab. The induction-heated SpeedFire reduces this to about 10 minutes, making same-day completion of zirconia crowns possible.

Ceramic With Water, Zirconia Without Water

The carving method also differs by material. Glass ceramics are wet-milled with water spray, while zirconia must be dry-milled to preserve its properties. 05Not Just Crowns — Inlays, Onlays, and Endocrowns

The real value of the same-day system is being able to confidently recommend prosthetics that remove less tooth structure.

Inlay — Precisely hollowing out and fitting only the decayed area. Completed same-day.
Onlay/Overlay — An intermediate step that covers the chewing surface without shaving down the entire tooth. Preserves a tooth that was about to become a crown case, more conservatively.
Endocrown — For a tooth with enough remaining structure after root canal treatment, this is bonded inside the tooth without full removal. This option is only possible with reinforced ceramics like Tessera and an in-house fabrication system.
Crown — Standard protection when little tooth structure remains. Molars mainly use zirconia.

06The Same-Day Process

Diagnosis and Treatment Planning

We check the extent of decay and cracks with low-dose 3D CT and Q-ray fluorescence analysis, and decide on the most conservative prosthetic form.

Tooth Preparation After Anesthesia

After topical anesthesia then i-ject computer-controlled anesthesia to reduce the pain burden, only as much of the tooth as necessary is removed.

Primescan Digital Scan

Scanning with about 20μm precision, without impression material. Finished in a few minutes with no gag reflex concerns.

Design → Milling → Sintering

After AI-assisted design, Primemill carves the prosthetic, and zirconia is sintered in the SpeedFire for about 10 minutes. You can simply rest during this time.

Fitting and Bite Adjustment

Fitting is done before the anesthesia wears off, with fine bite adjustment. Since the design data is kept on file, quick remaking is possible if damaged.

Prosthetics such as crowns and inlays are non-covered procedures. Not Every Case Can Be Done Same-Day

When gum inflammation is severe, when root canal treatment must come first, or when multiple teeth need restoration at once, it is safer to split the process into stages. Whether same-day treatment is possible is judged after diagnosis, and accurate treatment always takes priority over forcing same-day completion.

09Frequently Asked Questions

Can a crown really be finished in a single day?

Yes, it is possible when conditions allow. With the Primescan scanner, Primemill milling equipment, and SpeedFire sintering furnace all in-house, everything from scanning to fitting is completed within a 25–50 minute chair time. However, in cases of severe gum inflammation or where root canal treatment must come first, it is safer to split the process into stages, and whether same-day treatment is possible is determined after diagnosis.

Isn’t something made in one day made carelessly?

On the contrary. Compared to the conventional method of taking an impression and sending it to a lab, digital scanning with about 20μm precision and CAD/CAM milling actually involve fewer distortion factors. What is reduced is the back-and-forth with the lab and waiting time, not the fabrication steps.

What materials are used?

Depending on the case, we choose from hybrid blocks (LAVA Ultimate, VITA Enamic), CEREC Tessera reinforced ceramic, zirconia, or e.max. Molars mainly use high-strength zirconia, while aesthetic areas mainly use Tessera or e.max; the pros, cons, and cost of each material are explained together at diagnosis.

Isn’t it more expensive?

We do not charge extra for same-day treatment. Prosthetics are non-covered procedures whose cost varies by material and form, and Seongmo Dental discloses all fixed fees on its website.

Can a tooth that has had root canal treatment also get a same-day crown?

Yes, if the root canal treatment is already finished. If enough tooth structure remains, an endocrown with less removal may be considered instead of a full crown. For a tooth that still needs root canal treatment itself, that is done first depending on canal condition.

I have a severe gag reflex, so I’m afraid of taking impressions.

This is a major advantage of the same-day system. Instead of holding impression material in your mouth while it sets, a small scanner photographs the tooth to create the model, so even those with a strong gag reflex can be comfortable.

Isn’t the lifespan of a same-day crown shorter?

Given the same material and bonding, where it was made does not determine its lifespan. In fact, since the exposure time of the prepared tooth is shorter, the risk of secondary infection is reduced, and because the design data is kept on file, remaking after damage is quick. Lifespan depends on bite and care, and regular checkups are important.

Can inlays also be done same-day?

Yes. Hybrid block inlays can sometimes be completed in about 10 minutes from scan to fitting. If the extent of decay is large, the form may change to an onlay or crown, so we first check the extent with Q-ray fluorescence analysis and CT.
