That time a brand-new crown looked oddly out of place.
Now we measure tooth shade as a number
and match it.
Seongmo Dental Clinic measures tooth shade with the VITA Easyshade® V digital spectrophotometer. It replaces judgment that used to shift with room lighting or the clinician's eyes that day with hard numbers, and passes this data directly to the lab to match restoration shade.

The era of eyeballing shade matches is over. We measure, record, and compare.
Measuring tooth color —
why does it need a device?
The VITA Easyshade® V is a spectrophotometer that analyzes the full visible-light spectrum to quantify a tooth's value, chroma, and hue. It produces reproducible color data that doesn't change with lighting or the person observing it.
Matching tooth shade in restorations, veneers, and whitening treatment is far harder than it sounds. The same tooth can look different depending on the room lighting, the clinician's eye condition that day, and the tooth's hydration level. Dentistry has long relied on comparing shade guides by eye.
Seongmo Dental Clinic's VITA Easyshade® V measures tooth shade with a precision sensor instead of the human eye. It delivers objective, reproducible shade data that gives the same result under any lighting, no matter which clinician measures.

One tooth-shade measurement changes how well a restoration matches, and one whitening record changes how much you can trust the result — every step of esthetic treatment is backed by data.
Why didn't the shade match
on my front-tooth restoration?
Shade isn't a single value — it's a combination of value, chroma, and hue, and a mismatch in value especially stands out. Passing shade as numbers gives the lab a clear standard to reproduce.
The reason results differ even when both sides write down the same 'A2' is that a shade guide read by eye doesn't capture subtle differences in value. On front teeth, this difference shows immediately.
Seongmo Dental Clinic sends measured shade values together with Primescan scan data, and for restorations milled in-house with the Primemill, the measured value is applied directly. After seating, we double-check under different lighting conditions.
When Shade Matching Matters Most
Single Anterior Crown
Veneers
Restoration After Whitening
Matching shade isn't a matter of feel — it's a matter of recording and communicating it.
How many shades lighter
did whitening make my teeth?
Measuring before and after under the same conditions and comparing the numbers lets you confirm the actual change instead of relying on how it feels, and helps you reasonably decide whether further treatment is needed.
It's hard to feel the change while whitening is in progress, and once time passes you forget the original shade. So the question "did it actually work?" tends to linger.
When performing Osstem Beautis Light professional whitening, Seongmo Dental Clinic measures and records shade at the start and end. Changes during the maintenance period are checked the same way.

A standard unaffected
by lighting or condition
Spectrophotometry measures under its own light source and standardized conditions, reducing variation caused by room lighting, time of day, or the clinician.
Teeth look brighter when dry and darken again over time. They also look different under different light color temperatures. Without controlling for these factors, shade judgment changes every time.
Seongmo Dental Clinic combines a shadow-free lighting environment of CRI 95+ with spectrophotometric data to reduce judgment variation. Measurements are kept on record and referenced for future treatment.

Shade Guide Comparison vs. Digital Spectrophotometry
| Comparison | Visual Shade Guide | Seongmo Dental Clinic Easyshade® V |
|---|---|---|
| Who Judges | The Human Eye | A Precision Sensor |
| Lighting Effect | Strongly Affected | Measured Under Standard Conditions |
| Reproducibility | Varies by examiner | Identical Results |
| Record | Notes / subjective description | Numeric Data |
| Sent to Lab | A written visual note | The exact numeric values, unchanged |
| Whitening Comparison | Memory / photo comparison | Before/after numeric comparison |
The final shade decision is made by weighing measurement data together with neighboring teeth, gum color, and facial tone.
Tooth-Shade Measurement — Glossary
- Spectrophotometer
- A device that measures a color by its reflectance at each wavelength of light.
- Shade
- A classification standard for tooth color; VITA Classical A1-D4 is the best-known example.
- VITA 3D-MASTER
- A shade system that organizes color systematically by value, chroma, and hue.
- Value
- How light or dark a color is — the single biggest factor in a perceived color mismatch.
- Chroma
- How saturated or intense a color is.
- Veneers
- An esthetic treatment that bonds a thin ceramic shell to the front of a tooth.
Digital Tooth-Shade Measurement — FAQ
How is tooth shade measured?
A measuring tip is placed lightly on the tooth surface; the shade value appears within seconds. There's no pain and no radiation.
If my shade is measured, is the restoration guaranteed to match perfectly?
The measurement is an accurate starting point, but the final result also depends on material properties, the lab process, and the condition of neighboring teeth. Seongmo Dental Clinic uses the measurement as its baseline and double-checks under different lighting at seating.
Can I see whitening results as a number?
We measure before and after under the same method for comparison. You can confirm the actual amount of change from data rather than how it feels, making it easier to decide on further treatment.
If I only crown one front tooth, will the shade match?
A single anterior restoration is the most difficult case. We set a baseline with spectrophotometry and, if needed, measure and factor in multiple points by location. Even so, a slight difference can remain, so we discuss this thoroughly beforehand.
Should I whiten before getting a restoration?
It's generally best to lighten the natural teeth first, then make the restoration to match that shade, since artificial materials don't respond to whitening.
Is there a separate charge for shade measurement?
Tooth-shade measurement is part of the restorative/esthetic treatment process and isn't billed separately. Cost by treatment is provided after diagnosis.

How an esthetic result's shade appears can vary with material properties, neighboring tooth condition, and lighting. Treatment method and materials should be decided after a precise diagnosis and thorough consultation with your provider.
